A Nigerian man charged Saturday with attempting to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day was listed in a U.S. terrorism database after his father told State Department officials that he was worried about his son’s radical beliefs and extremist connections, officials said.

The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was granted a two-year tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy in London in June 2008 and has traveled to the United States at least twice before, officials said. His name was added to a catch-all terrorism-related database last month, when his father reported concerns about his son’s “radicalization and associations” to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a senior administration official said.

Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued by passengers and crew members aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Friday after he ignited an explosive device that set his pants leg and part of the airplane, which was preparing to land in Detroit, on fire. The incident marks the latest apparent attempt by terrorists to bring down a U.S. aircraft through the use of an improvised weapon and set in motion a series of urgent security measures that disrupted global air travel during the frenetic holiday weekend.

As covered in part 1 of this series, the split between anti-zionists and those who equate anti-zionism with anti-semitism was blown wide open last April by Jason Bermas of Loose Change fame, while guest-hosting the Alex Jones Show. He accomplished this by berating a caller who had the audacity to ask about Jewish control of the Hollywood media. This split widened to a fissure with the firing of Jeff Rense from GCN’s radio network, with Texe Marrs writing an article critical of Jason Bermas, and with Nathaniel Kapner opening the debate on whether Alex Jones is a zionist shill–or just a useful idiot.

Well, a new fissure has appeared between Alex Jones and those who honestly seek the truth in politics and history, which has been building gradually–along with the anti-zionist rift–since the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created in 2007. The two rifts, side by side, represent what has now become a gulf between the Alex Jones world and the rest of the war for truth and justice. As explained in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, when Alex Jones had the PrisonPlanet.tv forums deleted in a hissy fit live on air, it was just before this time that the PrisonPlanet.com forums were created. Because the members only .tv forums were un-moderated, Alex Jones equipped the new free forums at PrisonPlanet.com with moderators who would make Pol Pot flinch. These moderators have been suppressing the flow of information on PrisonPlanet.com’s forums ever since.

What information is there to suppress on an internet forum, you ask? It’s funny you should ask, because that’s one of the things I’d like to address. I made the case for anti-zionism in part 2 of this series, and it just so happens that this is one of the subjects under extreme scrutiny at PrisonPlanet.com. It seems Alex Jones has a reason to suppress any talk of Jews or zionism. I will leave it up to you to decide why that might be, although if you’ve been reading this series, I think I’ve made my opinion on the matter abundantly clear. When someone claims that Arabs own Hollywood, I have to sit back and smile at the sheer arrogance of the statement. Not to mention, my first thought is: “Who the hell is paying this guy to say that?” Yet Alex Jones has made this exact statement not once, but a number of times.

And how does one go about suppressing the flow of information on an internet forum? How do you go about the seedy business of appearing to be for truth and uncovering political crimes, while hiding and removing any trace of your own lies and crimes? It’s easier than you may think. People who are used to being lied to their entire lives sometimes have a hard time seeing through new lies, even if this is their main desire. But as with all lies, eventually the jig is up. A home built upon a foundation of lies is no home at all…

Following are four main tactics I have observed, which are used by internet forum moderators to suppress the free flow of information:

The first tactic is ridicule. Any idea outside of the accepted bubble must be ruthlessly vilified by both moderators and sycophantic registered users alike.

The second tactic is moving threads to “dunce” boards, which are basically forum boards where moderators can quarantine all “kooky” threads. This effectively quarantines the idea of the thread, along with the thread itself and the person who posted the thread. New users naturally shy away from these boards, not wishing to be outcasts. Included in this tactic is changing the title of threads to make the poster appear ignorant or even hateful, and merging “dunce” threads with other “dunce” threads in order to confuse the issues.

The third tactic is deleting posts and threads altogether… Forum posts which are critical of the moderators, or whose topics are taboo, can be simply deleted.

The fourth tactic is banning registered members from using and viewing the forums outright. The ban can be temporary or permanent. This is the tactic that appears to be the downfall of the PrisonPlanet.com forums.

PrisonPlanet.com’s forum moderators apply all of the above tactics to their forums with ruthless efficacy. Many users become disgusted by the blatant abuse of authority, and simply leave, not waiting to get banned or ridiculed. So some see the scam for what it is, and leave on their own terms. Others, as mentioned earlier, are too used to being manipulated to see through the charade.

There is an immediate danger the internet poses for the powers-that-be, and those powers have every motive–financial and political–to attempt to stifle dissent on the internet. It only makes sense considering the effort they’ve expended on suppressing truth through the mainstream media. They would be stupid to not attempt control of their opposition…

Only about one-third of respondents said they felt they were hearing too much from the president.

Pemex Oil Output Declines at Fastest Rate Since World War II

Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), Mexico"s state oil company, will probably report its fastest drop in production since 1942, eroding revenue as plunging crude prices limit the amount of cash available to drill for new reserves.

Pemex last year likely extracted 2.8 million barrels a day, down about 9 percent from the 3.08 million a day pumped in 2007, representing a total of $20 billion in lost sales, according to data compiled by the government and Bloomberg. Costs are rising at Cantarell, Pemex"s largest field, after declining pressure reduced output in the past five years.

Pemex"s Sbiggest problems have yet to come, said Alejandro Schtulmann, head of research at Empra, a political- risk consulting firm in Mexico City, in an interview. SThe fall in oil prices and lower production is going to make expensive exploration projects less attractive now.

Mexico relies on Pemex for 40 percent of its budget. Sliding Pemex output risks cutting supply to the U.S., which gets more oil from Mexico than all countries except Canada and Saudi Arabia.

Elements of an Inside Job in Mumbai Attacks

Indian police last week arrested Hassan Ali Khan, who was wanted for investigations into money laundering and other illicit activities, and who is also said to have ties to Dawood Ibrahim, the underworld kingpin who evidence indicates was the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month.

Ibrahim is also alleged to have close ties with both Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) agency and the CIA.

Another character linked to the CIA whose name is now beginning to figure into the web of connections between the Mumbai attacks, criminal organizations, and intelligence agencies is Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, of Iran-Contra infamy. Khashoggi has been implicated in arms deals with drug traffickers and terrorist groups, including within India.

Dawood Ibrahim is a known major drug trafficker whom India claims is being protected by Pakistan. As Foreign Policy Journal previously reported, there are also some indications that the CIA has a similar interest in preventing Ibrahim from being handed over to India. Ibrahim is wanted by India for the recent Mumbai attacks as well as for bombings that occurred there in 1993.

Ibrahim is a native of India who rose through the ranks of the criminal underworld in Bombay (now Mumbai). According to media reports in India, he got his start as an undercover informant for the police at a young age and thus has an intimate knowledge of Indian law enforcement and intelligence, and is alleged to have fostered close ties with individuals within the political system.

Another known associate of Ibrahim’s in Mumbai, Mohammed Ali, is suspected of assisting the terrorists, who were met by an individual in Uran before continuing on to Mumbai, where inflatable rubber dinghies had been arranged to take them ashore by the same individual. Numerous earlier press accounts indicated that the dinghies, along with other logistical assistance, were provided by an associate of Ibrahim’s.

The Times of India, for instance, reported on November 28 that according to police sources the Mumbai attack “was enabled by the Dawood Ibrahim gang”, and that “It would not have been possible to carry out a terror operation on this scale without a collaborative local network and this was provided by the D Gang. As the terrorists had entered via the sea, the needle of suspicion is clearly pointing at Mohammed Ali, the new poinstman of Dawood.”

Yet Indian news reports indicate that officials have been slow to act against Hassan Ali Khan, and Mohammed Ali continues smuggling operations out of Mumbai for Ibrahim’s crime syndicate, D-Company, completely unmolested by Indian investigators and law enforcement.

As the November 28 Times of India article observed, Ali “is known to indulge in smuggling of diesel, petroleum, naptha, drugs and arms with impunity and it appears that the terrorists had used his networks to enter the city by the sea route…. Despite having a detailed dossier on him, the authorities have not taken any action against him. What is more worrying is that Ali is believed to have also penetrated naval intelligence.”

A further report from the Times of India on December 4 noted that Dawood Ibrahim is “sitting pretty in Karachi” under the protection of Pakistan and his “hawala channel between Mumbai and Karachi remains busy”. “But central agencies question why the Maharashtra government has not taken any action against the D-company here.”

“‘What’s the point of asking Islamabad to hand over Dawood when we’re not doing anything to destroy his empire in Mumbai and other places in India?’ a senior official asked.”

The article observed that Mohammed Ali “continues to operate with impunity.

Again, on December 11, Times of India reported that “Mumbai police has still not called Ali for questioning”, adding that “Ali is also known to have the backing of two powerful politicians of south Mumbai and that could be the reason why he is still untouched.”

In addition to links to Ibrahim, both men are also alleged, like Ibrahim himself, to have ties to political officials in India, and there are numerous other indications emerging that the attacks were assisted by elements within India being protected by the political establishment.

GM Files: Horrifying New Disease Contains Identical Material to GM Food

In fact, the US has been trying for years to prevent the labeling of GM foods and seed in international trade to emulate its domestic policy which prohibits any label indication that foods contain GM ingredients, as 75-80% of all foods sold in the US do.

Now it appears that the increasingly prevalent nightmare of a disease called “Morgellon’s Disease” may be a result of GM crops and food.

Morgellon’s Disease was first described when a woman’s 3 year old son developed rashes and intensely itchy sores which produced weird multicolor fibers emerging from his skin. She put up a website about the condition in 2001 and named it “Morgellons Disease” after a 17th century report of a similar affliction.

As it always does, the allopathic community of Western, drug-oriented physicians labeled sufferers as delusional. As a physician, I have a great deal of difficulty explaining how a delusion can produce colored fibers which protrude from the skin and continue to grow in a petri dish. Be that as it may, the multicolored fibers produced by the “delusion” have been analyzed and we now know that Morgellon’s Disease is no longer rare, nor is it mysterious any longer. A study of the fibers shows that they contain DNA from both a fungus and a bacterium which are used in the commercial preparation of genetically modified foods and non-food crops (such as cotton). The fibers themselves are primarily cellulose, which the human body cannot breakdown or manufacture. So GM technology apparently has, like Professor Frankenstein, found a way to animate the non living. These fibers twist and twine, grow and divide. In short, living beneath the skin of people, they form parasitic lesions out of what should be non-living material but which, through the horror of genetic modification, has taken on the characteristics of a living thing. Barack Obama's election victory has inspired a windfall of comment, most of it euphoric, with some grumbling from the political Right and the small quarters of the Left that remain unimpressed, so I am hesitant to contribute to the chatter. There is one element of Obama's victory, however, that has received less attention than it deserves, and that is his profound commitment to an extreme form of Zionism. I do not wish to spend this essay condemning Obama for that commitment; I have done so elsewhere, and others have offered eloquent condemnation already, though such a perspective hasn't yet managed to penetrate the liberal-Left.

As a note of clarity, I do not use the phrase "extreme form of Zionism" for rhetorical effect; I deploy it soberly and literally. Obama's statements during his campaign unambiguously situate him in a right-wing Zionist outlook both politically and philosophically. During his 2008 AIPAC speech, for instance, Obama promised, "I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Everything in my power. Everything." Later, he remarked, "It was just a few years after the liberation of the camps that David Ben-Gurion declared the founding of the Jewish state of Israel. We know that the establishment of Israel was just and necessary, rooted in centuries of struggle and decades of patient work, but 60 years later we know that we cannot relent, we cannot yield, and as president I will never compromise when it comes to Israel's security."

These comments are notable for their implicit ferocity. Obama not only expresses fealty to Israel's lobby, he also refuses to set any parameters for what he would consider acceptable Israeli behavior. "Everything," after all, is a remarkably broad obligation.

Rather than condemning Obama's Zionism, I would like to instead focus on the justifications and rationalizations for his decision, especially those that dismiss its moral consequences and instead emphasize what its purveyors claim to be its strategic inevitability. I have seen countless times on the Internet and have heard even more frequently some variation of the following argument: "Obama had to court the Israel lobby in order to be elected; it's part of presidential politics in the United States." Bolder commentators suggest that it would be foolish to expect otherwise, a point implied by the novelist and blogger Laila Lalami: "During the primaries, I was often surprised at the line of thinking that equated Barack Obama with the status quo, simply because he was not progressive enough. Of course Obama was not progressive enough." Other liberals smugly accuse Obama's skeptics of purism, which they say has no business in serious political conversations.

Let's unpack some of these discourses. The first thing I would like to argue is that criticizing Obama for not being progressive enough is not the same thing as equating him with the status quo, though such an argument would have plenty of evidence to support it. Nor is it automatically naïve to suggest that Obama's sycophantic Zionism should be contested. To say that Obama had to cozy up to Zionist fanatics in order to be elected may well be true (though it's not a given), but proponents of this complaint assume that Obama's election was more important than the policies he supported. They also assume that Obama's critics misunderstood his motivation, which was to curry favor with a demographic that would help him achieve his goal of becoming president.

I cannot speak for other critics of Obama, but I am well aware that American elections are structured in such a way that certain groups must be appeased, Zionists being one of them (corporations and weapons manufacturers being a few others). I am also aware that no presidential candidate will be adequately progressive, because true progressives do not win presidential elections in the United States. It is not a lack of knowledge that leads me to criticize Obama's courtship of colonizers, but a devotion to those who suffer from the pernicious American policies that are reinforced by American electoral culture.

Israel is ethnically cleansing Palestinians. There is nothing tolerable about ethnic cleansing; it is a deeply violent process. It is thus ethically dubious to sacrifice the Palestinians (among others) to American electoral pragmatism.

If we are to pursue worldly justice, then, American presidential elections aren't the best place to devote energy. The problem is structured into the electoral system, which is why those who hope to effect change in the world are forced to concede their most basic moral principles when they invest themselves in national campaigns. They end up expressing a profoundly misplaced sense of purpose.

In the most recent election, they were forced to concede that Afghans may face an even more destructive military occupation and that the Palestinians will continue to suffer what has become a humanitarian catastrophe. This concession may be something they're prepared to live with, but we should remember that the Afghans and Palestinians have no choice. They must accept the consequences of American electoral pragmatism, which dictates that certain centers of power must remain impervious. Those impervious centers of power also work against the well-being of the vast majority of American voters, which is their particular genius. They manage to get people excited about enacting their own irrelevance.

Antonio Gramsci expertly assessed these phenomena many decades ago with his theory of hegemony, a commonly misused word these days. Gramsci developed the notion of consent that Noam Chomsky would appropriate and make popular. Of Gramsci's many germane points, the one most relevant here is his observation that what any given community automatically deems "commonsensical" actually supplements the interests of that community's elite. Commonsense, then, is not an intuitive, self-evident phenomenon, but a formulation that results from a complex process in which popular conceptions of a society's well-being become coterminous with the needs of the powerful and wealthy.

Ignoring Obama's uglier electoral moves, then, wasn't commonsensical or inevitable at all. It was the result of accepting ethnic cleansing as an American political reality. I doubt that Obama's pragmatists would have been such staunch advocates of electoral realism if they, like the Palestinians, were being removed from their homes and confined to bounded ghettoes. If readers might excuse the hyperbole, I am simply making a basic moral point: there are actual humans with actual feelings and families and aspirations that live with the brute realities that come of our abrogation of ethical probity when we choose instead to submit to the electoral limitations that the powerful have offered us.

I hope that my compatriots will remember that voting does not itself constitute action; work needs to be done outside of state apparatuses. I am aware, though, that most citizens are done acting for four years, having been told over and again that voting, an act of legitimation and not of change, represents the pinnacle of civic responsibility. (To be fair, this is true insofar as civic responsibility as defined by corporate media is to be a good citizen, the kind that doesn't go around making trouble doing things like thinking critically and challenging systemic injustices.)

One bit of heartening news is the fact that the Palestinians know better. A number of polls, including a recent one conducted by the Jerusalem Media and Communication Center, show that Palestinians "think the election of Barack Obama as U.S. president will have no impact on the chances of a solution to the conflict with Israel." Instead of sacrificing the Palestinians to their liberal fetishes, maybe Obama's apologists should just shut up for a moment and listen to them instead. .

Blackwater Guards Indicted For Iraq Shootings

A grand jury in Washington, D.C., has indicted at least five people who worked for security contractor Blackwater Worldwide for their role in a shooting incident in Baghdad in 2007.

A sixth employee is still in plea negotiations with prosecutors, and those are expected to continue through the weekend. The indictments are expected to be unsealed as early as Monday, when the first five — and possibly the sixth — are expected to be charged with manslaughter or assault.

The grand jury had been investigating the details of the shooting, which left 17 Iraqis dead, for more than a year. The Justice Department sent a draft indictment to a grand jury a couple of weeks ago. That grand jury approved the indictments on Thursday.

Gunfire In A Traffic Circle

On Sept. 16, 2007, a convoy of Blackwater SUVs entered a traffic circle. A short time later, shooting started.

Blackwater has said its employees began firing into oncoming traffic in self-defense — that a car rolled forward after they ordered the driver to stop and they feared an attack from a suicide car bomber. A subsequent FBI inquiry came to the conclusion that the shooting was unprovoked.

A Difficult Investigation

The incident prompted concerns in Iraq and elsewhere that no one would be held accountable. A gray area in Iraqi law raised the possibility that Blackwater might have immunity from prosecution.

Investigating the crime was also troublesome. The FBI eventually went to Iraq, bought some of the burned-out cars in the traffic circle from their Iraqi owners, and shipped them back to the U.S. for analysis.

Because there was no real legal system in Iraq set up to take care of this kind of problem, it was unclear how to hold people accountable and which courts had jurisdiction.

New Rules For Contractors

In the wake of the shooting, with Blackwater in mind, new standards of behavior for contractors are being put into place in Iraq.

Starting Jan. 1, 2009, the Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq says U.S. citizens who are contractors in Iraq will be subject to the jurisdiction of Iraqi criminal courts and civil courts.

Hemispheric Group Calls for Major Changes in Americas Policy

Ex-employees Tell ABC News the Firm Used Dog Food Sacks to Smuggle Unauthorized Weapons to Iraq

A federal grand jury in North Carolina is investigating allegations the controversial private security firm Blackwater illegally shipped assault weapons and silencers to Iraq, hidden in large sacks of dog food, ABCNews.com has learned.

Under State Department rules, Blackwater is prohibited from using certain assault weapons and silencers in Iraq because they are considered "offensive" weapons inappropriate for Blackwater's role as a private security firm protecting US diplomatic missions.

"The only reason you need a silencer is if you want to assassinate someone," said former CIA intelligence officer John Kiriakou, an ABC News consultant.

Six Blackwater employees are under investigation by another federal grand jury, in Washington, D.C., in connection with the shooting deaths of at least 17 civilians in September, 2007 at a Baghdad traffic circle. Prosecutors are expected to return indictments in the next few weeks, according to people familiar with the case.

The investigation of the alleged dog food smuggling scheme began last year after two Blackwater employees were caught trying to sell stolen weapons in North Carolina. The two, Kenneth Cashwell and William "Max" Grumiaux pleaded guilty in February and became government witnesses, according to court documents.

Two other former employees tell ABCNews.com they also witnessed the dog food smuggling operation. They say the weapons were actually hidden inside large sacks of dog food, packaged at company headquarters in North Carolina and sent to Iraq for the company's 20 bomb-sniffing dogs.

I'll let the article speak for itself but I have a question.

Is the left just totally blind to the corporate plans being hatched to destroy family farmers, or, in urban lingo, "sustainable agriculture"?

Or are we just insensitive to their being massively discriminated against and all their rights being tromped under, because they're conservatives?

An article here this last week mentioned all the regulatory moves being slipped past everyone right now by Bush before he (hopefully) exists. Deregulation of mountain removal and every kind of deregulatory gift to industries of every kind. So what do you make the regulatory move being made against farmers (making NAIS mandatory despite MASSIVE farmer resistance to it) not even being included in that article?

And what do you make of the USDA pushing "increased regulation" here, since all other slippery moves being made are "anti"-regulatory? When does the left wake up to finally seeing that regulations being pushed for "food safety" are being pushed by corporations, have NOTHING to do with safety and everything to do with eliminating the competition - real farmers?

And what does the left make of the fact that it is naive so f...... naive and miserably ignorant about agriculture while severe human rights abuses are happening right under their noses?

After I wrote yesterday about the race for a seat on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, a disturbing question came to mind:

Has Republican strategist Karl Rove succeeded with his long-running campaign to intimidate Democratic candidates for statewide offices in the Deep South?

In his seminal reporting on the Bush Justice Department, Scott Horton of Harper's magazine has raised numerous important points about the motives behind political prosecutions, such as the Don Siegelman case in Alabama and the Paul Minor case in Mississippi.

Two points, in particular, are rattling around in my head at the moment:

* The goal behind the Mississippi prosecution apparently was to dry up a key source of financial support for Democratic candidates. Paul Minor, an attorney who had become wealthy from bringing successful litigation against the asbestos and tobacco industries, was one such donor--in Mississippi and beyond. Minor was a major supporter of John Edwards' presidential campaign, and Horton has reported that Bush strategists had fingered Edwards as the most likely threat to Dubya's re-election in 2004. That evidently helped make Minor a target for the Bush DOJ--along with state judges Wes Teel and John Whitfield, who had received Minor's campaign support. Minor, Teel, and Whitfield all are in federal prison for crimes that, as we have shown in an extensive series of posts here at Legal Schnauzer, they did not commit. The message? If you give to Democratic candidates in a deep red, Deep South state, you will come to regret it.

* The goal of the Alabama prosecution apparently was to eliminate a Democrat who had a troubling habit of beating Republicans in statewide elections. Siegelman had done it four times--in races for secretary of state, attorney general, lieutenant governor, and governor. Rove and Co. evidently decided, "By God, he's not going to get re-elected as governor." And they used a federal investigation, and disappearing vote totals overnight in heavily Republican Baldwin County, to accomplish that goal. The message? If you are a Democrat who beats us at the ballot box in a deep red, Deep South state, we will make you pay.

Those messages came to mind after I wrote yesterday that Presiding Judge William C. Thompson, a Republican, is almost certainly going to be re-elected to his seat on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals--even though he is demonstrably corrupt. I know Thompson is corrupt because I had an appeal before him in 2005, and Thompson swept the unlawful trial-court judgment under the rug by issuing a no-opinion affirmance.

Thompson appears to be a shoo-in for re-election because Democratic challenger Kimberly Drake has not been able to put up much of a fight. My post drew the following response from Robert Sullivan, Drake's campaign manager:

To quickly and briefly respond to the Legal Schnauzer blog, we’re putting up as much of a fight as we can, given our resources.

Thompson does lead Drake in campaign contributions--this is Alabama and a Democrat will always face an uphill battle. He is a beneficiary of the same backers as Shaw (Greg Shaw, running for Alabama Supreme Court) and is another product of Rove’s gaming of Alabama’s elections.

However, Kim has TV spots scheduled to appear this week, as are some radio spots. She has given interviews with several newspapers and a radio station. She also appeared at the judicial fundraiser and candidate forum at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

In the mean time, Drake is still a mother of three and a lawyer, while Thompson has time to fritter away.

We are also reaching out to Christians, who are unhappy with Thompson. Politics makes for strange bed fellows.

This is not over.

I hope Sullivan is right, and I didn't mean to imply that Drake isn't doing the best she can do. In fact, she has two sure votes here in the Schnauzer household, and I encourage all Alabamians to vote for her.

My main point was this: Bill Thompson needs to be booted out of office, and it's a crying shame that the Alabama Democratic Party could not help a candidate (either Drake or someone else) put up a serious fight. For two or three years now, I've been trying to tell Alabama Democratic leaders that I can prove the all-Republican Court of Civil Appeals is corrupt--and I've been willing to go public with it. But Democrats have not been able to take advantage, and as a result, Bill Thompson almost certainly will get another six years on the bench.

But back to Karl Rove: Is it possible Democrats could not give Thompson a fight because they were afraid to do it, even afraid to win?

As Congress meets today and tomorrow to grill the principals before Friday’s vote on the $700 billion “emergency” Wall Street bailout plan (which has been in the works for months but strategically dumped on us all as an “emergency”), oil companies have instituted “rolling shortages” all over the Southeast. Some areas have been out of gas for more than a week and a half, and the situation is not expected to ease until Monday at the latest. Some gas - a single tanker at a time - is being delivered to stations along the Interstates and is being strictly rationed unless it’s diesel, one station per county.

State police are managing the gas lines to prevent violence, which did break out last week in the Nashville, Tennessee area when people started cutting in line. Food prices are rising so fast the stock boys at the grocery stores can’t mark up the goods fast enough, and the specter of looming fuel shortages for winter heat - or price increases that will force people to do without - is beginning to look very scary.

Bailout or no bailout - and despite the launch of FBI investigations of Fannie Mae, Freddy Mac, Lehman Brothers and AIG - the United States may well be fully in the clutches of major economic depression before winter even hits. Whether or not that translates to global recession isn’t much of an issue to regular people, as we here in our own homes wonder how we will survive. This post and several following posts in a new series will take a look at the steps citizens should take as soon as possible to ensure their families will make it through the next 6 months. If depression goes on longer than that, additional strategies will be necessary, some already compiled as series in this blog and available under the “Our Most Popular” header on the left side of the page.

Here in Part 1 there are two broad categories of concern citizens will have to work around in order to do for themselves, particular to not freezing, not starving, and not getting indefinitely detained or killed. Considerations must start NOW.

Things to Plan Around:

1. Availability of home heating fuel/gasoline.

It is quite likely that there will be rolling gas shortages throughout the next year. We can also fairly assume there will be drastic fuel oil shortages in the northern tier of the country, and that many will unfortunately freeze to death in their homes or die of carbon monoxide poisoning from kerosene heaters, or fires from badly planned fireplace/wood stove installations.

If you live in an area with ample woods with standing or down dead or a brisk firewood market for purchase, or availability of wood stove pellets, get yourself a wood stove. These come in all sizes and thicknesses, some need more protection to floors and walls than others. You will also need stove piping and must plan a way to get the smoke outside your house (can be through a removed windowpane if necessary). Stoves are often available reasonably cheap and in good condition through Craig’s List or other re-sale sources. Do your homework, install it correctly. If the electricity goes out or fuel oil is unavailable, your family will still be warm. AND you can cook on it!

Following Plato, many moralists have associated political virtue with a reluctance to pursue and exercise power. To want to rule others is to be morally disqualified from doing so. The strong tendency in traditional Western political thought to disparage a desire for power has been unfortunate. Without some people governing others, basic social order could not exist, to say nothing of effecting desirable change. The prejudice against power-seeking has left politics too much to people with the wrong kind of ambition, who want to rule as an end in itself.

The reason for observing that the pursuit of power need not be immoral but can be a means to good is that this article will challenge a particular manifestation of the will to power – one that finds expression in increasingly influential arguments for boosting the prerogatives of the American president and the federal government. The criticism that will be directed here against that hankering for domination must not be misunderstood as stemming from opposition to any and all efforts to acquire power. What will be rejected is an inordinate and blatantly partisan, and therefore perverse, craving to rule – a dream not just about taking over the U.S. government but about dominating the world. The people who have this desire attempt to conceal its real nature by pretending that it comports well with the thinking of the framers of the U.S. Constitution. It is in fact alien to that thinking. Would that power of a different quality could prevail against it!

A merely self-serving desire for power cannot present itself as such. It must portray itself as a wish to assist others. How best to argue for giving you or your group great power? If you are able to persuade others that the present world is grossly oppressive and destructive of human happiness but that you can make it much better, those others may support mobilizing massive power and placing it in your hands or the hands of people like you. The more ambitious your scheme for benevolent change, the greater the need for power.

Since the French Revolution, ideologies have been exceptionally conducive to power-seeking. Jacobinism, Communism, and National Socialism are alike in promising glorious change and assuming the desirability of giving vast power to those who claim to know what needs to be done. A few years ago, David Frum and Richard Perle provided an all-purpose justification for unlimited power: putting "an end to evil" – the title of their co-authored book. Now there is a noble and ambitious goal! Power beyond the dreams of avarice would be needed to realize it. That rooting out evil might be an endless task only increases its appeal to a ravenous will to power. We are, of course, supposed to believe that the connection between advocating sweeping change and needing great power is purely coincidental.

It has come to be that American government is of the lizards, by the lizards, and for the lizards. Tonight, there will be a fakey, staged "debate" between Barack Obama and John McCain, both of whom are running to be the Lizard-in-Chief. I wonder if I should wish good luck to them. "May the best lizard win!" As usual, on Election Day in November, Americans will try to vote for "the lesser of two lizards." Well, America, I have come to the end of my sympathy. If America once again elects the lesser of two lizards, then there should be no complaining; no outrage; and no dismay in the next presidential term.

Americans cannot look at me and ask, "Hey - who put these lizards in charge?" --if, in fact, it was my fellow Americans - you - who elected the Lizard-in-Chief. Perhaps I should offer my apologies for disparaging a fine species of reptiles. They don't deserve to be tarnished with brush strokes that conflate American politicians into their ranks.

There is a fakey, manufactured economic crisis that has been overplayed by politicians and talking heads, who have been boggling as if the sky is falling - and, they have used the fear of the crisis to ram through Congress a $700 billion bailout for Wall Street's guilty - basically a mugging for America's taxpayers which contravened the principles of free markets and private enterprise. Barack Obama and John McCain both voted for this bailout and thereby became two muggers. We can say they revealed themselves to be lizards.

Obama and McCain should be going to jail, not the White House! And further, the American people still have 20 days left to figure this out; to forward this text; and to catch on in time to change the outcome of the election. They should do so. They should follow this line of reasoning. They should reclaim America's future. Let's remember that actual Americans were against the bailout by a margin of 200-to-1. It means, they agree and if you forward this text as an email, they may thank you. (Try it!)

I don't mind exerting a bit of influence that's like leadership on the side of the American people (not lizards). When I was the 18 year old candidate for U.S. President (1984), bumper stickers said, "People Are Important," and I emphasized that the budget must be balanced and taxes must be fair - two of the planks in my "politics of practical idealism." I am now writing to you from the age of 42, and I've added knowledge and experience since 1984, but I'll stand by the politics of practical idealism.

At the age of 18 I wasn't wrong, and I learned a lot about the politician's game. I know how these lizards think. "Trickle down economics" was objectionable when Reagan first extolled it, and I rose to be the youngest-ever political opponent of Ronald Reagan. Trickle-down is also known as "voodoo economics," and I tried my darnedest to swat it in 1984. So, I have a history of fighting for the American people against the lizards. (I told you not to re-elect him, and I even said that you could write in my name! :)

Pakistan Parliament May Summon Musharraf

The ruling PPP says Pakistani lawmakers may summon ex-Gen. Pervez Musharraf for pursuing the US-led war on terror in the country.

In an interview with a private television channel on Monday, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said, PPP supports the statement of Muslim League-N Chief, Nawaz Sharif, to summon Pervez Musharraf to the Pakistani parliament.

"Musharraf should tell the parliament how many citizens were arrested and sent to foreign countries during his tenure," Babar said.

Babar's comments come in response to former premier Nawaz Sharif as he renewed his demand for bringing ex-president Musharraf to trial for his actions during his nine-year rule.

Sharif says Musharraf should be summoned to the parliament to reveal agreements forged with the US in the war on terror.

A UK lawyer earlier had claimed that Musharraf had allowed a large number of his compatriots to be put into the US Guantanamo prison.

Russia test-fired three long-range missiles on Sunday and pronounced its nuclear deterrent strong in a show of force that experts said had not been seen since the days of the Cold War.

Two of the missiles were fired from nuclear submarines in the Asian and European extremes of the sprawling country while a third was watched by President Dmitry Medvedev on land in northwest Russia, news agencies reported.

It was the second Russian intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test in as many days and the latest in a series of high-profile military exercises of conventional land, sea and air forces as well as strategic nuclear units.

"This shows that our deterrent is in order," Medvedev was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying after Sunday's missile launches.

"We will of course be introducing new types of forces and means into the military," he added, without elaborating.

Independent military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer said the exercises reflected Russia's determination to prepare for major military conflict.

"This was a dry run for a war with the United States," Felgenhauer said of the missile launches, part of major military manoeuvres billed "Stability 2008" involving all military branches.

"These are the biggest strategic war games in more than 20 years. They are on a parallel with those held in the first half of the 1980s. Nothing of the sort has been seen either in Russia or the United States since then," he said.

Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo confirmed the near-simultaneous ICBM test-launches from submarines in the Sea of Okhotsk north of Japan and the Barents Sea northeast of Norway, saying they had been planned well in advance.

Speaking to AFP from northwest Russia, Dygalo admitted it was unusual for the navy to conduct three ICBM test launches in two days -- a submarine in the Barents Sea also fired a missile Saturday -- and called the tests successful.

"The missiles hit right on target," he said. News agencies said the missiles launched from the Barents Sea and the secret base at Plesetsk hit targets on the Kamchatka peninsula thousands of kilometres (miles) to the east.

The allegations draw parallels with the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, which created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT.

"How often does Delta come up with a tactical plan that's disapproved by higher headquarters?" CBS's Scott Pelley asked the commando leader.

"In my experience, in my five years at Delta, never before," he replied.

The only remaining option was a frontal assault by 50 US Delta Force members plus their Afghan guides -- and the Afghan warlord accompanying the commandos frankly told them, "I don't think you guys can handle it." A few million dollars from the CIA quickly secured his cooperation, but only to a degree.

The Delta Force leader told CBS that the Afghan fighters went home every night, abandoning whatever territory had been gained that day. "It was almost like it was an agreement, an understanding between the two forces fighting each other," he stated When the CIA did come up with an exact location on bin Laden, it was nighttime, and the Afghan support was nowhere to be found.

"It wasn't worth the risk at that particular moment to go up there and play cowboy," the leader told CBS. "It was better to be cautious, refit, go up there with the entire force the next day and play the battle out as we had planned." But when he attempted to move on bin Laden the next day, his Afghan allies balked, saying they had negotiated a cease fire with al Qaeda, and even drew their weapons on the Delta force team to prevent it from acting alone.

Shortly thereafter, intercepted radio communications showed that bin Laden was on the move. A cave which al Qaeda members had been seen entering was bombed for several hours, and it was thought that bin Laden had died there. But when US forces checked the cave six months later, bin Laden's body was not found. The Delta Force leader believes he received medical treatment in a local village and then got away safely into Pakistan.

President George W. Bush proposes a massive bailout for Wall Street, of what was to be $700 billion, but already it turns out — not surprisingly, somehow — that the administration underestimated exactly how much, and who else needs to be bailed out. According to Bloomberg News:

The Bush administration widened the scope of its $700 billion plan to avert a financial meltdown by including assets other than mortgage-related securities. The U.S. Treasury submitted revised guidance to Congress on its plan a day after first submitting it, as lawmakers and lobbyists push their own ideas. Officials now propose buying what they term troubled assets, without specifying the type, according to a document obtained by Bloomberg News and confirmed by a congressional aide.

The change suggests the inclusion of instruments such as car and student loans, credit-card debt and any other troubled asset. That may force an eventual increase in the size of the package as Democrats and Republicans in Congress negotiate the final legislation with the Bush administration, analysts said.

“The costs of the bailout will be significantly higher than originally considered or acknowledged,” said Josh Rosner, an analyst with independent research firm Graham Fisher & Co. in New York. “How, given these changes, can the administration and Federal Reserve believe they are being forthright in their unrevised expectation of future losses?”

In another change today, the Treasury said it would limit its $50 billion plan for insuring money-market funds to those held by investors as of Sept. 19, excluding any subsequent contributions.

November 1934:

Federal investigators uncover an incredible plot involving about two dozen senior businessmen, many of them Wall Street financiers, to topple the government of the United States and install a fascist dictatorship. An alert President Franklin D. Roosevelt shut it down.

A key element of the plot involved a retired general who was to have raised a private army of 500,000 ex-soldiers; the general turned whistle-blower when he learned just what the plot really entailed. The plot was heavily funded and well developed and had strong links with fascist forces abroad. A special congressional committee was created to conduct an investigation. The records of this committee were scrubbed and sealed away in the National Archives, where they were not made available until just last year.

The committee kept the names of many of the participants under wraps, and no criminal action was ever brought against them. But a few names have leaked out. Among them was Prescott Bush, the grandfather of President George W. Bush.

Prescott Bush was deep into the business of the shipping firm Hamburg-America Line and had close relations throughout this time with the new government that came to power in Germany a year earlier under Adolph Hitler.

Prescott Bush later went on to become a U.S. senator from Connecticut. His son, George H.W. Bush, emerged from World War II as a hero, later becoming CIA director, vice president and president, and his son George W. Bush went on to become president, also known as ‘Bush 43.’

The plot against America portrayed in this episode of the weekly BBC series “Document” from July 2007 gives fascinating insight into a little known piece of American history in which the nation stood on the very brink of betrayal. The role of one of the most powerful political families in our nation’s history in this whole affair is shocking.

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D. Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America [known as the American Liberty League], (owners of Heinz, Birdseye, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Maxwell House Coffee & George Bush’s grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the Great Depression.

Now here we are yet again, in the midst of a recession or depression depending upon whom you ask, with our tax dollars for generations to come about to be handed over to wealthy Wall Street corporations, with a Bush family member balking at any attempts at restrictions or conditions.

Will Republicans finally stop making jokes about welfare recipients and “government hand-outs”?

Will the government (or the Wall Street financiers) help our friends and neighbors get their repossessed homes back?

It’s often felt to me as if we’ve had a fascist dictatorship in power these last seven-plus years with George W. Bush in the White House, so it makes me wonder if this bailout will throw democracy under the bus and bring Prescott Bush’s deferred dream of corporate-run fascism to fruition.
